Why is Papiamento an important language to learn?

Most people long to spend lazy days sitting in the sand under the shining sun in the Caribbean and you are probably one of them.  While many people will choose to visit the Bahamas or Jamaica, you may want to consider a destination a little more out of the way.  The western portion of the Leeward Antilles is comprised of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao, and they are all considered paradise by those who have taken the time to visit.  This area is also known as the Dutch Caribbean, which is why Papiamento is the official language of these three islands.  While you do not need to learn Papiamento to visit any of these islands, it can be helpful if you want to communicate with the three hundred thousand plus people who live there.  As you are learning Papiamento, you may notice that it has some similarities to Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French.  This shouldn’t surprise you too much, because this Creole language has elements from each of them, as well as a couple other languages.  Many of the Creole languages are quickly disappearing, which is why you, and many others, need to learn these languages before there is no one left to share the intricacies of each one with future generations.
