Why is Somali an important language to learn?

Somalia is not the destination that you want to choose for your next vacation right now, but if you can keep the faith that foreigners can cross the border again one day, you will want to be prepared.  Learning Somali will get you one step closer to entering Somalia, where you can begin to explore the beauty that has been forgotten over the last couple of decades.  Somali is also spoken in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti, so you never know when you may need to show your skills and speak the language of the locals.  Right now, there are more than sixteen and a half million people that speak Somali, and with the civil war that has been taking place, it is almost guaranteed that you will hear this language in many of the nearby countries.  The reason for this is that some people were able to escape Somalia during the war and now they have made their homes in other parts of the world.  Learning about the culture in Somalia, as well as the war, is much easier once you know the language.  You will not lose anything within the translation, and you can instantly see where this country is hoping to head in the future.  While Somali will not help you in many areas of your life now, there is an excellent chance that you will be using this language much more than you think in a few years.
